Quite appropriately, it was during the month that includes Family Day that our local chapter of Spinal Cord Injury Ontario (SCI) held a Ski Day for members and their families at Edelweis Ski Hill. We often think of what a hinderance snow can be for those who are wheelchair bound or mobility restricted, limiting transportaiton options along sidewalks blocked by snow and ice. So it’s wonderful to know that snow on the slopes can also be enjoyed by those who have suffered spinal cord injuries along with their families.
Thanks to SCI and an amazing team of volunteers from the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS), several participants and their families came out on February 13, 2019 and had an opportunity to safely try sit skiing. CADS brought skilled volunteers, equipment and instruction. Lawyers and law clerks of Burn Tucker Lachaîne provided funding and hand warmers and gained a great opportunity to meet new people and try a new sport. A good time was had by all. https://sciontario.org/peer-connections-ski-day-ottawa/ Described by one participant as like kayaking in snow (while tethered).
Than you SCI Ottawa for the opportunity to join you in this great event!!
