At a press conference at the end of July, the OPP released data about fatal motorcycle crashes, showing an alarming surge in the number of deaths. While the focus was on southwestern Ontario, with the sharp increase seen in that region, the report serves as a cautionary tale to riders everywhere.
As of July 28, 2022, there had been 25 fatal crashes involving motorcycles on OPP-patrolled roads and highways. Talking specifically about southwestern Ontario, the OPP advised that there had been 12 fatal crashes, up from the average of 10 per year for the region, with half the summer still to go. The police also noted that the crashes occurred in sunny, dry conditions, on weekends between noon and 4 pm. Men from age 45 to 64 make up the largest demographic of riders involved in fatal crashes. Speeding, failing to yield at intersections and loss of control were cited as the main issues.
Some recommendations for riders are to be extra vigilant at intersections, keep their head on a swivel, and wear clothing that ensures they can be easily seen. Motorcycle safety courses and refresher courses can also be very helpful.
As summer draws to a close and we head into the fall, some of the best riding is just ahead. I have known and represented many motorcycle enthusiasts and they are exactly that. For those who ride, it is an unparalleled passion. I hope that other drivers keep an eye out for motorcycles, that riders do everything they can to ensure their own safety and that the last couple months of the 2022 riding season are beautiful and safe.
