Soup Sisters is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to making and donating nutritious soup to women, children and youth. Every month, thousands of people get together in over 20 cities in Canada to prepare soup under the guidance of a chef. The soup is then donated to local shelters. Participants are expected to pay for the ingredients ($55.00 per participant in Ottawa) and to donate about 3 hours of their time. The cooperative efforts produce more than 10,000 servings of soup every month.
On a frigid evening in January 2017, many lawyers and law clerks from the law firm of Burn Tucker Lachaîne gathered with other participants at Ottawa’s Grounded Kitchen to prepare approximately 150 servings of soup. The delicious Moroccan red lentil soup, barley and vegetable soup and potato and bacon cheddar soup was donated to the young women’s shelter operated by Youth Services Bureau in Ottawa (YSB). As explained by the social worker of YSB, meals are provided to the shelter from Monday to Friday. On weekends, the young women often rely on a healthy warm bowl of soup prepared by Soup Sisters.
Our evening was filled with laughter, great conversations and lots of chopping!
