On April 2nd, 2016, I had the pleasure of speaking at Citizens for Safe Cycling’s Spring event, along with other community leaders including Minister Catherine McKenna and representatives from the City of Ottawa and the NCC. Sadly, my topic was “What to do if you have been in a Collision”, but it is is an important topic and it was great to connect with local cycling enthusiasts and advocates.

If you have been in a cycling/car crash, it is important to report it to the police if you are injured and/or if there is property damage of more than $1,0000.00. It is also important to seek medical attention if you have injuries and to speak with an injury lawyer so that you know your rights and obligations. Speaking to a lawyer does not necessarily mean that you will be proceeding with a claim – consultations should be free, with no cost to you, and there should be no obligation to proceed. Having the information a lawyer can provide will ensure you are well prepared to deal with the insurance company.
While cyclists are required to follow the rules of the road, they are also treated as pedestrians if there is a collision, which means that the driver of the vehicle will be presumed to be at fault, unless he/she can prove otherwise.
If you are a cyclist and you have been involved in a collision with a vehicle, we can offer you a no cost, no obligation consultation at our offices in Alta Vista, at your home or the hospital or by phone, if you prefer. We represent only injured accident victims, never the insurance company, and our practice is completely dedicated to injury and disability claims.
