Many people who have been injured in car crashes are not aware of the full range of accident benefits that may be available. Statutory accident benefits are paid by your insurance provider, and depending on your particular situation, these benefits can be received in addition to any compensation you receive through a tort claim against the party responsible for the crash.
For many car accident victims in Ottawa, lost income is a major issue. If a person is unable to return to work because of a crash-related injury, then he or she may be entitled to income replacement benefits, which can provide payments on a weekly basis to replace a portion of the income lost as a result of the crash.
Similarly, medical benefits and rehabilitation benefits may be available to help cover the cost of care. Medical benefits can cover a variety of reasonable and necessary expenses, including ambulance services, surgery, hospital care, chiropractic treatment, dental services, prescription eyewear and mobility devices.
The reasonable and necessary expenses covered by rehabilitation benefits can include family counselling, employment counselling, transportation to and from counselling or rehabilitation sessions, and injury-related accommodations at home or at work.
If you are unable to care for yourself or your home because of an accident, then your insurance may also cover attendant care and home maintenance benefits.
A longer list of statutory accident benefits is available under Ontario’s Insurance Act.
The process of making an injury claim and receiving accident benefits can be a complicated matter, and it is a good idea to have a personal injury lawyer on your side to explore every available legal option for obtaining compensation.
