Ontario Provincial Police say that charges are pending in a two-vehicle accident that sent seven people to hospitals. The crash happened near Milverton at the intersection of Perth Line 67 and Perth County Road 121 shortly before 4:30 p.m. on July 31.
According to a preliminary report, a Peterbilt truck was pulling a full trailer of gravel when it hit the driver’s side of a southbound Chrysler Town and Country minivan on Perth County Road 121. The impact sent both vehicles into a nearby soybean field. Police had to close the section of road between Perth Line 72 and Perth Line 61 for several hours during their investigation of the scene.
The 23-year-old North Perth transport truck driver did not suffer injury in the motor vehicle accident. However, there were seven people in the minivan, and all of them were injured. A male adult and a male child were flown to hospital in London. The 34-year-old male driver, two other adults and two children were transported to hospital as well. The driver was later transferred to London for treatment.
Traffic crashes that involve trucks pulling heavy loads have the potential to cause serious injuries to the victims. Suffering injuries in a crash could also cause financial troubles. However, the injured could seek compensation for certain damages in court. If awarded compensation, they may be reimbursed for the loss of income and out-of-pocket medical expenses.
Under the Family Law Act, the victims’ parents, children and grandparents could seek compensation for the damages from the allegedly at-fault driver. This might include travel expenses to visit the injured victims during their treatment and recovery. They might also receive a reasonable allowance for the value of services or loss of income if they had to care for the victims, and the action could also compensate them for the loss of companionship and guidance that they expected had their loved ones not been injured.
