Children in Ontario headed back to school last week so we thought we would take this opportunity to highlight school bus safety issues.
All drivers must stop for the flashing lights of a school bus. This applies to drivers travelling in both directions (except on a highway separated by a median). Failing to stop may result in a fine of up to $2,000.00 and six demerit points. Subsequent offences may result in fines of up to $4,000.00, six demerit points and possible jail time.
This spring, signs went up in Orleans reminding drivers of their obligation to stop. The “I stop, you stop” campaign was instituted in response to a number of near-misses in the area, as reported by Orleans Online http://www.orleansonline.ca/pages/N2013121301.htm.
For parents, remind your children to:
Wait for the bus in a safe place, away from the edge of the road
Stay seated while the bus is moving, always facing forward
Keep your arms and head inside the bus at all times
If you drop something while you are getting off the bus, do not try to pick it up as the driver may not be able to see you
Even thought the bus has its red lights on, you should look both ways before crossing the road in front of the bus
We wish all students have a safe and happy school year
