Halloween is a time of year where children are out trick-or-treating. Although this is a fun filled event for kids, it also brings increased risks of motor vehicle accidents for both drivers and pedestrians. Let’s keep our children safe by following these safety tips:
The safety of everyone on the road during Halloween starts with responsible driving. If you plan to celebrate with drinks or any substances that can impair your judgment, plan for a designated driver, use public transportation, or call a rideshare service. Impaired driving significantly increases the risk of accidents, especially with so many children out trick-or-treating. Even a small amount of alcohol or other substances can affect your ability to drive safely.
Always follow speed limits, especially in neighborhoods where children are crossing the streets. When driving in neighborhoods, drive slowly and be ready to stop, as kids may run into the road unexpectedly. Since trick-or-treating happens in the evening, use extra caution in low-light conditions. Keep an eye out for pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks, as children may be distracted by their costumes or candy and not pay attention to cars. Also, be particularly vigilant for kids in darker costumes who might blend into the surroundings.
While following pedestrian safety rules is essential year-round, it’s especially crucial on Halloween. Always use sidewalks when they are available. If there’s no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, as far to the right as possible, facing oncoming traffic. Make sure to cross at intersections and designated pedestrian crosswalks whenever possible, and always remember to look both ways before stepping onto the street.
Halloween is a time where the streets are filled with children. Avoid being distracted while driving or walking and prepare for the unexpected as children can jump out into the street at any given time. As a driver, avoid using your cellphone, adjusting the radio, or engaging in other distractions. Your full attention should be on the road.
Pedestrians should also avoid distractions such as the use of cellphones and earphones. Your attention should be on the road in front of you, traffic, and your environment.
Stay aware of your surroundings during Halloween. As a pedestrian, keep an eye on the people around you and watch where you step, as cracks and holes in sidewalks can be hard to see at night and may cause you to trip. As a driver, be hypervigilant of children trick-or-treating as they may cross the street unexpectedly.
Choosing the perfect costume is not only about finding the spookiest one; it’s also about ensuring your safety. Avoid costumes that drag on the ground or limit movement and visibility. It is important to be able to move freely and be vigilant of traffic and other pedestrians without any restrictions. You can also use reflective tape on your costume to increase your visibility to drivers in low-light conditions and reduce the risk of an accident.
By following these safety tips, both drivers and pedestrians can enjoy a fun and secure Halloween. Staying alert, adhering to traffic rules, and being vigilant of your surroundings are key to reducing risks. We encourage you to be mindful of pedestrian safety and educate your children on the importance of the rules of the road this Halloween. On behalf of Burn Tucker Lachaîne, we wish you a spooky but safe Halloween!
