Did you know that driving at dawn and dusk are the most dangerous times to drive? Dawn and dusk have an effect on our visibility which can pose significant hazards. The sun at these times of the day is low.  It can shine directly into our eye while we are driving our vehicle and create a glare.   Depending on the time of the year, rush hour traffic can occur at dawn and dusk. The glare paired with fatigue and rush-hour traffic can result in impaired vision and therefore, hinder our ability to drive safely.

Because the sun rises late and sets early at this time of the year, it is likely you will be out driving during these times.  Avoiding driving at these times would be ideal, but most of us drive to and from work during these hours. In order to avoid a motor vehicle collision or striking a pedestrian, it is important to identify potential hazards such as difficulty spotting changing road conditions due to the deep shadows caused by the glaring sun.

Driving under these conditions can sometimes be stressful. Having the know-how to handle the conditions can help make our commute safer and smoother for us and other users on the road.

Here are some tips and tricks to ensure you are prepared for any conditions:

1. Make sure there is enough space between you and other vehicles and are slowing down to ensure you have enough time to stop suddenly if required.
2. Although you may not need your headlights to drive, turn them on anyway. This will activate your taillights, making it easier for those who are driving behind you to see you. While many newer cars have daytime running lights and automatic headlight options, do not take those for granted.  Use the switch or button to ensure the headlights are on and stay on throughout the drive.
3. Avoid looking directly at the sun and use your sun visor and/or sunglasses to help shield your eyes.
4. Make sure your windshield is clean, inside and out.
5. Limit your distractions, such as loud music, eating and drinking and checking or talking on your phone.
6. Avoid driving when tired. Our brain is hard-wired to be sleepy when it’s dark outside. If you find yourself distracted or having issues focusing on the road, pull over and rest.  As other drivers may also be tired while driving during these hours, watch out for vehicles that have trouble maintaining their speed or are swerving between lanes.
